KEEP FRIENDS CLOSE & YOUR SNACKS CLOSER

10th August 2022

Research has shown that toddlers, kids and young children need to snack regularly to get an ample number of calories and nutrients they need for growth and development. Suitable snacks can be nutrient-rich additions to children’s diets as they grow and develop quickly. Traditionally, a snack refers to something small such as a piece of fruit or two pieces of biscuits that offer a few carbohydrates and calories to keep your little one fuelled until they have their next meal.(How Often Should Kids Snack? | Nutrition Tips from Bellamy’s, 2022)

However, in recent years the concept of snacking has changed significantly. It is widespread to see toddlers and young children munching high-sugar processed snacks daily. This is not what doctors suggest for growing children to eat frequently.

Growing children need various nutrients, including proteins, iron, fibre, calcium and essential fats of 1000 to 1400 calories per day. You can consider the size of a small child’s stomach as roughly as the size of their fist, and now it’s easy to understand why three meals per day are not enough for them to give all the required nutrients. That is why doctors recommend that young children include snacks in their daily intake .(How Often Should Kids Snack? | Nutrition Tips from Bellamy’s, 2022).

Younger kids need to eat three meals and at least two daily snacks. Older kids need to eat three meals and at least one daily snack. Snacks should make up to 28% of the total daily energy intake (Austen, 2018). Therefore, it is essential to provide various flavours, tastes and textures. This will also increase the child’s familiarity with a wide range of foods and encourage healthy eating habits.

As humans, we always crave processed, fried and sugary drinks because they give us a feeling of relaxation and act as a stress burster for our mind. Because of high-calorie intake, the internal system puts its total energy into digesting them, and you feel relaxed for some time, but are they healthy for you? The answer is no. There are many ways to stop cravings for unhealthy/sugary items. Some of them are listed below (Why do I crave fried foods?, 2016).

  1. Drink water: Thirst is often confused with hunger or food cravings.
  2. Eat more protein: Edibles like boiled eggs, meat or Avocados.
  3. Plan your meals: Make a schedule of 3 main meals and one meal for a snack.
  4. Avoid being extremely hungry: Human body tends to eat more when extremely hungry leading to overeating.
  5. Get enough sleep: Plan to have at least 7 to 8 hours daily.
  6. Fight stress: Get yourself involved in physical activities and meditation to boost your mental health.
